Gore-tex fabric is a three-layer fabric designed to be both wind and waterproof as well as breathable. What does that mean? It means that the fabric is totally waterproof but also allows moisture to evaporate through it. Therefore it keeps the rain/snow/sleet off you but allows you to sweat through it! And if you've ever been excercising in cold weather, you'll know how uncomfortable (and possibly dangerous) it is to get sweaty!

Designed around 25 years ago, it's become one of the most useful fabrics for outdoor clothes in use today. Used in coats, jackets, bivvy bags and gators, it's a tried and tested material with many uses. If you're excercising in any conditions, Gore-Tex can help keep you dry and warm. Inferior waterproofs won't let moisture escape, resulting in you becoming hot and sweaty after a while. This obviously results in you becoming uncomfortable, but can also result in real danger in cold conditions - this trapped moisture can end up chilling you severely, so you can see why Gore-Tex is such a useful material!

The fabric is made up from three layers. The outer layer is a wind and waterproof fabric that protects you from the elements. The inner layer is added for comfort, warmth and to protect the middle layer. Sandwiched between the inner and outer layer is a membrane that only allows moisture to pass one way: away from your body. Therefore, the fabric stops moisture coming in but also allows moisture out!
